Choose guidance for the location

A UK domain does not mean every rule is identical throughout the country. Before using an article, identify where the premises are located. Guidance for a business in England should not automatically be applied to premises in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

England and Wales

The main explanatory guides on this site address England and Wales unless their scope states otherwise. Start with GOV.UK workplace fire safety guidance, then use the guidance for the particular premises. Requirements for specialist buildings may need additional sources and competent advice.

Scotland

The Scottish Government publishes its own non-domestic fire safety guidance. Start there for Scottish premises, including the appropriate material for the building use. Do not simply replace the place name in an England and Wales checklist.

Northern Ireland

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service provides assessment information and premises guides. Use those resources to identify the relevant local starting point. Keep a note of which guidance informed your decisions.

Check scope before relying on a page

Look at the publication date, jurisdiction and premises type. If you manage buildings in more than one nation, maintain distinct records and obtain appropriate advice for each. The official links below help you choose your starting point; they do not constitute an assessment of your premises.
